I think the most common misperception is that somehow we are all part of this “cult,” this secret society. We’re really not. We are just like everybody else. I laugh when people come up to me and say “You know my uncle is one too, maybe you know him?” We DO NOT all know each other. There is no monthly newsletter.

The other one I personally get a kick out of is when people are convinced we want to convert them…like we have some sort of quota to meet. I usually tell them I’ve already met my quota and gotten my toaster oven.

Truth is: we’re everybody. We are just like you and your neighbors. As a matter of fact, your neighbor might be one of us! We are lawyers, firefighters, professors, scientists. Some of us are housewives, gardeners, politicians. We are Hispanic, Caucasian, and Asian. Men and Women alike; we are no different. We don’t aim to be different, we don’t think we are different and we do not want to be different. We are, continue to be, and always will want to be equal to everybody.

I put my pants on one leg at the time, just like you do. In our household we divide household chores equally; my other half does the gardening because frankly: I don’t have a green thumb.

We don’t seek out children. We are not contiguous. I am not attracted to chickens, goats, dogs or horses. I lead a respectable life and am a moral person and good citizen. Just like you.

I believe in live and let live.

My name is Sven Paardekooper and I am a homosexual.

Below is an interview I did earlier this year for a radio show called Journey to Recovery. I talked about what addiction was like for me and what I learned from it along my journey to recovery. The interview was done by Dr. Terry Grand, a retired physician with over 25 years of the field of addiction. Journey to Recovery airs every Thursday at 6pm on LATALKRADIO. Take a listen, and let me know what you think.
